Background of the study
Morphological innovation in digital communication reflects the creative adaptation of language to new media formats. On Instagram, captions are a vital component where Nigerian users exhibit linguistic creativity by inventing new word forms, abbreviations, and hybrid structures (Ibrahim, 2023). These innovations often arise from the need to convey complex ideas succinctly within the platform’s visual and textual framework. The interplay of local dialects, global trends, and platform constraints leads to a vibrant linguistic landscape that challenges traditional morphological norms (Okafor, 2024). This study assesses the morphological innovations evident in Nigerian Instagram captions, comparing them with conventional language forms. It explores the mechanisms of word formation and the socio-cultural influences that drive these changes, providing a comprehensive overview of how digital communication fosters lexical creativity and language evolution (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While morphological innovation is increasingly observable in Nigerian Instagram captions, there is a lack of systematic research exploring this phenomenon. Most studies have focused on general digital language use without delving into the specific morphological processes at play (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how digital affordances encourage the creation of new word forms and their impact on traditional vocabulary, thereby hindering theoretical developments in digital morphology (Ibrahim, 2023).
